John Lewis Partnership: Real IT Awards 2015

Having worked on a number of assignments since 2013 with the John Lewis Partnership we were delighted to be invited to their table at the 2015 Real IT Awards, where they were nominated in two categories. The annual awards dinner is a night to celebrate successes, with a plethora of well-known organisations shortlisted against a range of awards categories. The event recognises hard work and achievements in innovation, creativity and outstanding accomplishments.

The Award
One of the John Lewis Partnership’s two nominations was for Project SPInE, a programme undertaken in Q3/Q4 2014 and managed by Project One. Their nominated award category was ‘Infrastructure as an Enabler’, which is awarded to IT teams that demonstrate high effectiveness in handling future infrastructure needs, at optimal cost and minimising unnecessary operational disruption. They are looking for projects that enable the business to function successfully whilst delivering clear business benefit.

The Aim of the Programme
During the peak trading period in the run-up to Christmas 2013, the John Lewis Partnership experienced technical issues that impacted their business, both in-store and online. A large number of underlying technical problems were identified and these needed to be addressed in time for peak trading for Christmas 2014.

What the Programme delivered
As a result, Project SPInE had to deliver a number of solutions, quickly. A significant number of changes were identified, and once made, these changes would deliver a significant improvement to the core infrastructure. There was little time and a lot to do. Through 29 individual projects, and a team of 70 individuals, the programme ordered over 300 new individual ‘made-to-order’ items of hardware, often with an eight week lead time on delivery, which were implemented through 550 separate implementations, the majority of which took place during September and October 2014. They were delivered just-in-time, without undue impact on business operations, providing the much-needed capacity and stability through their peak trading period.

“It has been a phenomenal effort and great to see the determination you have shown to give us the maximum benefit as we go into Peak trading, a big thank you from me.”
Patrick Lewis, Managing Director, Partnership Services (Business Services Division)

“I’d like to thank Project One for the drive, commitment and focus they brought to the SPInE Programme. Project One only came in at the start of August with three months remaining, so getting the programme to the place of having successfully delivered that much change within the timeframe with no major impact to the Partnership was an outstanding achievement.”
Grayson Bowler, Head of Architecture & Strategy, Partnership Services (Business Services Division)

Competing against Centrica, Serco and PRS, we are proud to announce that Project SPInE was awarded Runner-Up in this category. Congratulations to everyone at John Lewis Partnership who was involved with Project SPInE, this award is recognition for a great outcome. Our Programme Manager James O’Sullivan said “This is excellent recognition for Project One as it underlines our ability to deliver a programme in a short timeframe that needed rebaselining to deliver to critical timeframes and turn it around and deliver the required business critical benefit, reflected in John Lewis and Waitrose trading performance in stores and online across Black Friday and the Christmas Peak period.”

Congratulations to all Project One clients, past and present, who picked up awards. Great recognition for all of the hard work that the project teams put in helping their Businesses prosper:
