Virgin Media: 'Project Lightning' boosts national economy
Having worked alongside Virgin Media since 2011 on a number of programmes across the Business Areas and within Technology & Transformation, we are very proud to be part of their continued growth plans.
Virgin Media reached headline news recently following their announcement in February this year that they are embarking on “Project Lightning”; the single largest investment in broadband digital infrastructure in the country for more than a decade.
This will connect approximately four million more UK homes and businesses to broadband speeds of 152Mb, at least twice the fastest speeds available from competitors.
The £3 billion of additional private investment is essential for individuals and businesses to thrive in the global digital economy and the investment will create 6,000 direct new jobs, including 1,000 new apprenticeships, created over five years, as well as expected to benefit the UK economy by £8 billion.
Virgin Media welcomed the Prime Minister to site to launch the infrastructure investment. Prime Minister David Cameron said:
“I welcome this substantial investment from Virgin Media which is a vote of confidence in our long-term economic plan to support business and create jobs by building a superfast nation backed by world-class infrastructure.
These 6,000 new jobs and apprenticeships will mean financial security and economic peace of mind for thousands more hardworking families across the country.
Together with this Government’s rollout of superfast broadband which has now reached more than two million UK homes and businesses, this additional private investment will create more opportunities for people and businesses, further boosting our digital economy and helping secure a brighter future for Britain.”
The significance of this announcement to Project One is that it underlines our role in leading business-critical and complex change. With this significant level of national investment our client wants to ensure that their investment in change is under control and focused on the right things.
Following our work on a pilot in Q3/Q4 2014, our Programme Management team of Neil Drummond and Simon Birbeck have subsequently mobilised a central programme for successful delivery, working closely with senior stakeholders across the wider business to build their confidence in a programme of this size and scale.
The programme team are now focused on driving a large and challenging programme delivery schedule, building teams across the organisation and working with third-party suppliers and vendors around a joined-up approach to develop the enabling technology systems and applications that will further aid the planned schedule of civil works.
“Key to the success is how we as the programme team work with key business sponsors and owners to drive the delivery of the operational changes to processes and systems, in order to provide the capability to enable the planned business outcomes.” Neil Drummond, Project One.”
We are very proud to be part of the biggest investment in UK internet infrastructure in 10 years, and it is fantastic to be involved in something characterised by significant investment and growth, bringing real value to their most critical change programmes.
